Eating to Live in a Fast Food World
Healthy eating in an unhealthy culture is almost impossible unless we accept the facts we face daily. In our often busy world there is a silent killer all around us on corners and in the malls – with those attractive fast food joints. We all have to get to our jobs, schools, or important task rapidly and they offer tasty treats at rapid speed.
Why do we intake such good tasting, yet bad for us food? The smell, of that delicious looking greasy steak and cheese sandwich with the onions and pepper sauteed in that grease, you can even see the grease dripping from the sandwich as it is getting made. The double burger with the extra toppings on it, not just the good toppings like tomatoes I am talking about the heavy mayo and ketchup. Or when you are driving down the street in your car and smell that juicy beef, or pasta, or bread smell flowing through your car your mouth get just a little bit watery. We are victims of our fast food culture with no time to prepare a healthy meal, so how do we eat healthy in spite of our self inflicted limitations?
The way we can do this is by eating with awareness, nearly everyone eat their food when it is a down time. We love snacking during times when we are just sitting around the house doing nothing but watching TV, or even when you are sitting in front of the computer and you get this urge to eat something. While it can drive you crazy the thought that you have until you get something you are craving, since the food that you will consume is something you could have done without. While it is challenging to eat to live in this fast food world the following tips will help you accomplish this feat with ease:
o Drinking more water throughout the day and drinking less or none during your meal time.
o Taking time out of your hectic moments to mediate and or do active breathing.
o Eat smaller portions when you do eat your meals.
o Eat more frequently during the day instead of 3 times per day eat 5 to 6 smaller meals.
o Most places even fast food places have healthier meals, even if you do not like it as much take a break from fried foods and ask for grilled foods.
o Replace your soda with a nice health tea or glass of cold ice water.
By following a few of these tips or even adding one a week, we will eventually notice a dramatic effect on our overall health and become accustomed to our new healthy life style.
Nutrition For Seniors
It seems each time you switch on the TV or look in a magazine you see a story about the problem of worldwide obesity. People are getting more unhealthily overweight every day to the point of it becoming life threatening. In the past, there have always been a small number of people who ate unhealthy foods, but now that number is quickly growing. We need to carefully consider how our unhealthy diet affects us.
Eating the wrong types of food can cause us to feel lethargic and sluggish. We’re getting the wrong kinds of nutrients from all this junk food we consume. It’s important to consider the quality of the food we eat, especially if you are a senior. As we age, our metabolism slows down quite a bit. We can’t burn the calories at the same rate as when we were kids. This is what makes older people put on weight more easily and makes it harder to take off too. Gaining weight may affect seniors in a negative way, more so than younger people. Being overweight can put a lot of stress on your joints and can accelerate the problems of osteoporosis and arthritis. It can also contribute to other illnesses and muscle disorders. Being overweight can bring on diabetes, which is very common to seniors.
Everyone should treat themselves to something they really like to eat, now and then, but one shouldn’t over do it. It’s important to maintain a balanced diet. A good diet for seniors could consist of: Up to ten servings of fresh fruits and vegetables. Up to ten servings of complex carbohydrates like pasta, bread, rice and cereals. Three servings of calcium containing products, such as cheese, yogurt and milk (low fat is best). Two servings of fish, poultry or meat for protein. A large helping of fiber, such as fruit, vegetables and cereals. This diet will not only provide good health, but will also fulfill all of your nutritional needs. All of us, especially seniors should avoid salt and saturated fats. Salt is really bad for high blood pressure. If you do use salt, just use a tiny amount. Most foods naturally contain some salt, so we really don’t need to add any. Try not to use too much salt while baking and preparing food. Don’t keep the salt shaker on the table while eating either. This will help break you of the habit of salting your food. Besides laying off the salt, stay far away from saturated fat. The body just isn’t meant to handle it. Saturated fat is hard for your body to break down. It just sits around, clogging your arteries.
This is one of the main causes of obesity, cancer and gallbladder disease in our society today. Just as a well balanced diet can improve you health, a bad diet can cause it to deteriorate. This is especially dangerous for seniors. Seniors usually aren’t as active as young people and have a harder time working off the extra calories. If you can keep your weight down, you’ll improve your mobility and be able to burn more calories. It’s important for seniors to enjoy life. If you eat a sensible diet and maintain a proper weight, you’ll be around to enjoy your life a lot longer. You only get one chance at life. Make the most of it. Improve you diet today and you’ll be rewarded with good health and long life.
Laser Treatment on Black Skin – What Are the Side Effects?
Laser treatment on black skin needs tremendous care. A little carelessness during the surgery may result in an array of side effects. So, if you have darker tones of skin and are considering going for it, make sure that your doctor is well specialized in this field otherwise the procedure can be a bit of a problem for you. It is very important for you to understand that the color of the skin matters a lot here. Different laser procedures are used for different skin colors. Following are some of the aftereffects that you may experience after the surgery if the surgeon is not highly specialized.
Discoloration Of Skin
Laser treatment on black skin may sometimes result in discoloration of your skin around the treated areas. This condition may remain for the next several months after the surgery is performed. However, the condition does not need any farther treatment. Things will automatically be alright within a year. People with darker skin pigmentation are strongly recommended to ask the doctor about it. In some cases, the doctor may inform you beforehand that your skin is very much likely to react this way if you go for the laser therapy.
Burning
You may also experience a certain amount of burning because of the Laser treatment on black skin. However, this will mainly depend upon the concentration of melanin present in your skin. Laser emits light and higher concentration of melanin may absorb the same, which may eventually result in burning.
Blistering
Just like burning, blistering can also be a possible side effect. It is also related to the concentration of melanin in your skin. The absorption of light because of the higher concentration of melanin can also prompt blistering on the treated areas.
The Risk Of Infection
Skin infection is another possible side effect of laser treatment on black skin. However, it is not applicable only to the people with black skin. Any one who is going for this therapy is at risk of inviting some skin infection. After the laser procedure is performed, skin tends to become tender and thus becomes more susceptible to germs. When germs find their way into your skin, infection is an obvious outcome. That is the reason why it is so important monitor your condition thoroughly after the surgery. You must visit your doctor regularly in order to make sure that things are alright. If your doctor finds something wrong, he/she may offer you some remedy for the same before things go worse.
Scarring
Laser treatment on black skin may also have several other side effects, such as scarring. You may develop scars on the areas treated by laser. However, scars occur only if the surgeon is an inexperienced one who damages your skin unreasonably in the name of the treatment.
As we can see, most of the side effects are avoidable if you choose the right surgeon for you. If you be a little careful, the laser treatment on black skin can prove to be very effective.
Healthy Food Means Yucky Food!
So, you are ready to make some changes in your family’s diet. You’ve heard and read enough to know that eating Real Food is important to your family’s health and happiness. You know what your kids eat when they are young not only affects their health now, but also in the future. You are feeling good about your decision. Your intuition is supporting you. The science is behind you. Unfortunately, your kids are not on the same page.
They are complaining about the fresh fruit. They practically ‘throw-up’ seeing anything green on their plates, and they’re secretly calling Grandma to tell her about this unfair abuse. Don’t despair. It’s temporary. It might be intense, but it’s almost always temporary. Stick to your goal of creating a healthier and happier family, and stay connected with other moms who are doing the same thing.
The following ideas help hundreds of moms get through the bumps of changing their children’s diets. The more you do to educate and involve them, no matter what their ages, the greater the chances your journey will be a little smoother.
Educate your children, without making a really big deal about the changes. Talk about how, just like a car needing good gas, our bodies run the best when they have the nutrients they need. A car would break down if you put something besides fuel in the tank. The same with our bodies when we put too many anti-nutrients in.
Borrow some books from the library that have great charts, illustrations and pictures about the body’s amazing parts. Talk with your children about how they can keep their body working the way it is supposed to if they give it the right fuel.
Have them help pack lunches and snacks, and help cook. It takes longer, but if you have the time, it’s really worth it. Talk about the colors and textures of the food. The phytonutrients, found in those deep bright colors, are nutrients that will help strengthen your child’s immune system. You can download our free color chart to help you with this.
Consider setting up a two-bite rule and the food has to make it down to the tummy. Explain that their taste buds may need to adapt to the new flavors. It takes many, many times of eating the same food for some children to accept the taste.
Read Eat Healthy, Feel Great, by Dr. William Sears. Talk about the differences between the nourishing food at home and the party food that is available at parties. Discuss how eating ‘party’ foods all the time will make their bodies break down eventually.
Relate their performance at school and in sports and hobbies to the foods they eat. They will think better and focus longer when their brains are nourished. They will run faster and jump higher when their muscles get the food they need. Be on the lookout for older role models to point out to your kids – ones that do take care of themselves physically.
Talk with your pre-teen and teenager about how food affects his or her appearance and mood. Make a plan to go on a sugar-fast together for two weeks and see what changes you each experience. Talk about it each day to see if they are experiencing detox symptoms and cravings so you can help them understand their bodies are trying to get healthier and the cravings are because they are hooked on sugar. Once it is cleared, they will begin to feel better.
Monitor how much candy, pop, cookies, muffins and other non-nutrient foods your children are being offered at school, church, friends’ homes, etc. It is your right and responsibility to say something if you prefer your child not to have those foods.
If your children are resistant, try to breathe and do your best. The moment we give in to demands for something else to eat or for sugar, they know we are not so serious about making changes. Be consistent, just like with all other parenting decisions, and your kids will take you seriously and know that you truly value their health and happiness.
Anti Aging Nutrition – Dr Oz’s Secrets of the Blue Zones
Nutrition is the key to anti aging doctors argue and having the right diet will deliver you many more years if you accompany it with the right lifestyle.
Recently on the Oprah Show, Dr Oz the resident quack covered a story on a National Geographic study by Dan Buettner, whose book is entitled, the Secrets of the Blue Zones , helped to unearth the various regions around the globe where becoming a centenarian was more than common.
After 7 years traveling and studying various communities, there were four places which stood out from the rest. These were located on a small island off the coast of Japan, a bizarre religious town in the States, a non descriptive village in Costa Rica and the island of Sardinia.
Nutrition was at the center of the longevity argument for two of these communities, Nicoya in Costa Rica and Sardinia.
The Nicoyens lifespan it was reported was attributed to their water, some of the hardest in the world as it’s teaming with minerals, most notably calcium.
Calcium is proved to relax your arteries, build your bone strength and it has a huge impact on how you function and age doctors argue.
Similarly, the people of Sardinia also consumed large quantities of calcium found in their staple diet of goats milk and Pecorino cheese.
Sardinia also holds the world record for the largest male centenarian population and the hidden secret scientists unearthed was whats known as the Resveratrol effect.
Found in the grape skin Resv is a fungi which grows naturally to help protect the grape against harmful bacteria, but if consumed, scientists state – acts an artery scrubber .The people of Sardinia consume three times as much Resv as the rest of us which they argue attributes to their longevity.
Resveratrol is fortunately now sold in the bottle, and each bottle contains 60 capsules which is the equivalent to roughly 1000 bottles of Sardinian red wine so the concentration is obviously high!
Physical Fitness
Physical fitness is a necessary requisite for leading a healthy and an active life. It not only improves the strength and endurance of the body but also the lifestyle of a person. Physical fitness is difficult to maintain, especially amid the stress and strain of contemporary lifestyles, with little scope for exercise and recreation.
The vital components of physical fitness are cardiovascular strength and endurance, respiratory efficiency, muscular strength and flexibility. In addition, a number of other factors such as environmental, chronological and physiological age and genetics influence physical fitness. The physical fitness methods adopted by one person should not be the same as for another, since the physique and health condition are usually not the same. Though physical activity or exercise acts as a catalyst to achieve physical fitness, a well-balanced diet also aids this process. A regular and systematic workout and a planned meal is a recommended way to maintain physical fitness. Small physical activities that suit an individual’s physical condition are more effective than heavy exercises.
Being physically fit will reduce various health-related problems such as obesity, hypertension and cardio-vascular problems. Apart from developing strong muscular mass, physical fitness induces wellness and emotional stability. In addition, a better performance of heart, lungs and other body organs is assured. Physical fitness can be achieved through yoga sessions, aerobic classes and muscular fitness exercises.
Today, more and more people are concerned about the importance of physical fitness in their lives.
