PostHeaderIcon Beauty Tips You’ve Never Heard

Your morning beauty regime takes you exactly 12 minutes. First comes the face wash, then the astringent, followed by the moisturizer. And the list goes on. It’s become such a chore, but wasn’t there a time when this routine was fun? Well, we decided to take you back to the days when applying makeup was a treat by giving you some innovative beauty tips and tricks to spice up your routine.

To get this insider information, we contacted Carmindy, resident make-up artist on TLC’s “What Not to Wear,” and author of The 5 Minute Face. Here are her 10 beauty tips to leave you feeling fresh and fabulous.

Beauty Tip # 1 – Make perfume last.

A few spritzes of perfume in the morning will not carry you through the day, no matter how expensive your bottle may be. To make your scent last, try this beauty tip: put an unscented moisturizer on first and then spray on your perfume a few seconds later. “There’s so much alcohol in perfume,” Carmindy explains, “that if you spray it on dry skin, a lot of times it evaporates so quickly. But if you have moisturizer on your skin it adheres much better.”

Beauty Tip # 2 – Lip gloss without the goop.

Instead of directly putting the tube of gloss to your lips, Carmindy recommends adding an extra step to ensure less stickiness. “I like to put lip gloss on my fingertips first and then just pat it onto the flesh of my lips. And this way you’ll get a little bit of glow, but it won’t be too goopy.” Also, try a moisturizing lipstick or a lip stain first before you add the gloss to make sure the color stays put.

Beauty Tip # 3 – A sweet scrub.

“The best exfoliate in the world is regular white table sugar.” If every scrub out there contains some form of sugar, like “Almond Sugar Scrub” or “Brown Sugar Scrub,” why not just use what’s in your kitchen cupboard? “What happens is that the small crystals dissipate in water so they don’t tear your skin.” And, if you have sensitive skin, don’t fret. “It even works better because with other products you might not like a fragrance or a lot of ingredients,” states Carmindy. When you’re in the shower, all you have to do is lather your face up like normal and then get a handful of sugar and scrub your face. And if you run out you’ll be able to ask your cute neighbor for a spot of sugar!

Beauty Tip # 4 Ditch your spot concealer.

Instead of fumbling around your makeup bag for multiple concealers in the morning, just stick to one, advises Carmindy. The reason why? Because you can actually use the foundation stuck to the top of the cap of your liquid all-over concealer as your spot-treatment. “It oxidizes there so it becomes a little bit thicker.” Plus, she says, “It’s the same shade as your foundation, so it will instantly erase your blemish.” To apply, just take a small tip concealer brush and dip into the cap of your foundation, or the nozzle if you use a spray. Then brush it on the spots and you’re ready to go. Now it will be a good thing when your foundation lid gets cakey.

Beauty Tip # 5 – Recycle: Good for the earth, good for your lips.

What are you supposed to do when your four best lipsticks are almost gone and your finger is tired from scraping out the remnants below? Carmindy suggests combining the half-used sticks into your own lip pallet. “Go to the drug store and purchase a plastic pill box and dig out the lipstick that’s left in the tubes. Then put each color into a different little section of the pill box.” You can mix and match the colors or even put Vaseline in one of the sections to make your own lip gloss.

Beauty Tip # 6 Celebrity-size lips.

To get fuller lips people often outline them with a pencil, but most of the time it looks noticeable and unsophisticated (especially when the lipstick comes off and you’re left with just that awful line). To get invisible enhancement, Carmindy recommends you take a Q-tip and dip it in a little bit of white shimmer eye shadow and lightly trace the outside of your lips. “What will happen is that the shimmer will capture the light and make your lips seem larger.” You won’t be able to see it, but the slight glimmer will do the trick. Great if you don’t have any collagen handy.

Beauty Tip # 7 – Bronzed but not dirty.

Dusting bronzer all over your face can make you look like you’ve been rolling around in the sand box all day or have picked up a part time job as a chimney sweep. Carmindy prefers a spray bronzer to get the appearance of a fresh summer tan. “I like to spray a sponge and then what I do is just push it onto the skin–on the temples and then right underneath the cheekbones because this is kind of where the sun would kiss your face. And if you like powder bronzer you can apply it in the same places too.”

Beauty Tip # 8 – Brow breakthrough.

If you’ve been awarded barely there eyebrow DNA, you’ve probably tried everything to make them visible–and figured out that most of the time these products end up rubbing off by the end of the day. If you still want eyebrows at five p.m., Carmindy advises buying waterproof liquid eyeliner that matches your hair color like black, brown or taupe. Then, she says, “You can take an angled brush and feather the liquid eyeliner on to your eyebrows and it will stay put all day long. It looks more natural than a pencil and stays longer.” It’s a win-win.

Now if you’re like me and are on the opposite end of the brow spectrum you might need some help keeping your out-of-control brows in check. To do this, “Take a spooly brush or an old tooth brush, put a little hair gel on there and just brush it onto your eyebrows to have them stay put.”

Beauty Tip # 9 – Not your average smoky eye.

“What I like to do is take a color like a navy blue or a sparkling kind of burgundy purple and just line the inside rim and right along the upper and lower lash line and then smudge it with a Q-tip. That way, there’s no eye shadow pushing the eye back, but you still have the smoky effect because they’re lined with color. If you have deep-set eyes, Carmindy advises you to avoid putting dark shadow on your eyelids because it will make them seem even more pushed back. “There are so many ways to do a smoky eye, but people always think there’s only one way to do it.”

Beauty Tip # 10 – Save time and eye shadow

Running late in the morning? The best thing you can put on is white shimmering highlight powder. “If you highlight three key places you set of the planes of your face–you don’t even need eye shadow,” says Carmindy. These key spots are underneath the eyebrow, on the inside corner of the eye and on top of the cheekbone. “It brings sparkle to the eye; it lifts up the lid and draws attention to the top of the cheekbone.” Now all you need is a big cup of coffee to actually feel as awake as you look.

Who says your beauty routine has to be boring–especially now that you can take a box of sugar with you in the shower or turn a pill box into a personalized lip pallet. With these beauty tips You just might have to rethink your 12 minute routine after all.

PostHeaderIcon Liabilities Insurance – A Must For the Beauty Practitioner

The present economical crisis is encouraging many to commence new careers especially as beauty practitioners. The growing number of these new small business owners may suggest prosperity to holistic therapies schools and a large variety of professional beauty seminars and colleges. The problem is that it comes with the need to consider the responsibilities and liabilities that come with the new occupation acquired.

On the one hand it is a simple solution, and a good opportunity to make some money in the comfort of one’s home, and maybe use the family car for business, but, on the other hand, a customer can perceive you did them wrong, or in a worst-case scenario, treatment may cause actual physical damage or injury to the customer.

Of course, there are insurance solutions and protections that can be acquired, but the beginning practitioner is not very keen on spending any money before actually seeing an income from their new career.

Well, those who cannot afford insurance are exactly those who cannot afford exposure. The right time to commence a liability insurance coverage is actually BEFORE the newly-trained practitioner commences activity. The best time to acquire coverage is at the time of training, while still a student, when no previous event may affect future coverage. The risk has not been taken yet, and the coverage will ultimately be upon all future activities.

Another important reason to purchase insurance early is that in many cases, students commence practicing in order to either improve their capabilities, or out of the need to earn money.

The cost of insurance scares many from buying the right coverage. It is not necessarily true in all cases. Insurance costs are closely connected to the exposure and risk the insurance company is taking:
- The smaller the sum insured, the lower the premium.
- If a higher deductible can be sustained, the premium will go down even more.
- Sometimes when purchasing a comprehensive policy that includes all necessary liability chapters, it is possible to obtain a better premium rate for such a policy.
- Many professional associations either offer or arrange discount rates for their members or include them in their liability cover when they become members. This saves a significant amount of money, as such organizations negotiate with insurers for large groups and obtain better terms, both in costs and terms of coverage than individuals are able to obtain by themselves.

Many times you can tailor your own coverage, and find out that coverage can be obtained at quite reasonable cost.

There are a number of chapters that are musts in liability coverage:

1. Public (General) Liability: this will cover you against claims made against you resulting from injuries or property damage for which you are legally liable. Remember – even if you have a public liability clause in your household insurance policy, in most cases it will not cover claims that are connected to your business practice.
2. Professional or Malpractice Insurance: this will cover your professional conduct. Combining the two aspects of coverage, professional conduct and malpractice, will provide you with comprehensive cover. Although these claims are also defined as ones to which you are legally liable, it is common practice in the insurance industry to exclude from a policy coverage that can be purchased under another type of policy, therefore, neither public liability nor professional liability policies by themselves will be sufficient to cover general public liability.
3. If you are applying certain products in the course of your practice, you should also be protected against claims resulting from product liability. If you use products that are manufactured by a recognized manufacturer, the coverage you require can be restricted to legal protection and not liability for the product itself.

Liability insurance is not compulsory in most cases, but it is a must, especially for new practitioners in any industry, and specifically for those who treat people directly. The cost is a problem in some cases, but the risk of being left alone to deal with a claim is by far more problematic, and in many cases, the resulting cost far higher.

PostHeaderIcon Beauty Truths, Beauty Myths

Some commonly held beliefs about necessary skin care are absolutely true like the fact that you should wash your face every night. Other information that we have had drummed into our heads for years about how we need to take care of our skin is not accurate. For instance, the notion that we can not get our skin to be the best it can be without having facial masks from time to time is not true. Facial masks may be enjoyable for some and that is fine but they are not a necessary skin care treatment. They can leave the skin smooth and silky once the mask has been washed off but that change is very temporary. Very quickly the skin is back to looking and feeling the way it did before the mask was applied.

Another widely held belief is that if we wear a foundation with sunscreen we are giving our skin adequate protection. This is not the case. The amount of foundation most women apply to their faces would yield only a negligible amount of protection. To have the optimal coverage one should use a moisturizer with sunscreen. Typically, women apply moisturizing lotion much more liberally than they do foundation which would give them much better protection. Even so, if you know that you will be out in the sun for an extended time reapplication of moisturizer with sunscreen is recommended.

Some experts have advised that it is wise to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going into the sun but that theory does not seem to be accurate. It is advisable to have your sun lotion in place before you go into the sun but it can be applied immediately before your sun exposure and still be perfectly effective.

There has been a lot of talk lately about people not getting the required amount of Vitamin D because of the prevalent use of sunblock. The truth is that even if we use sunscreen very liberally we will still get an adequate amount of Vitamin D which is essential to many facets of our good health.

There are dozens of deep cleaning products on the market any many claim to be what is needed for deep cleaning of the pores. According to Ellen Marmur M.D., (Chief of the Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery Division at Mount Sinai Center in New York) this is totally inaccurate. She suggests that if you enjoy getting facials for the relaxing, pampering treatment that they are, that is great. Understand, however, that she considers them to be completely unnecessary. With her credentials, we can give credence to her advise on this matter.

PostHeaderIcon Business Cards for Beauty Professionals

If you are in business you need business cards, there is simply no way of getting around it. Not only will business cards allow you to get your name out there, it also gives you more of a professional presence when you do meet with new potential clients. Imagine being some place and hearing someone talking about needing the beauty service that you specialize in. Instead of offering your number scribbled on a piece of paper you can offer your business card, which will make a much better first impression. Many people simply order the cheapest business cards they can find or they improvise with scratch pieces of paper, but if you are serious about your business you want to be sure to show other people that with professional business cards.

Any business card is great, but because you are in the beauty business you might want to think about color business cards. Not only will you be able to infuse a bit of your personality into the business card, it will also get and keep the attention of those that receive the card. Many times business cards are all that you get in the way of a first impression, so you want to consider full color business cards that will reach out and grab a potential clients attention. Many clients actually spend a lot of time analyzing business cards and your potential clients may think that you don’t really have an eye for detail if you weren’t even willing to get color business cards! Think about this for awhile by imagining yourself as the customer ad what you would want to see.

Beauty business cards should be more colorful and unique than the average business man or woman’s business card. The reason for this is that the beauty industry is competitive, so you need to do all that you can to get the attention of other people. Also, you want to have a business card that illustrates your abilities. If you do nails and all that is on your business card is your name and your number it simply seems a little bland. But, if you do nails and you have a full color business card that has nice colors and art on it, the business card will get someone’s attention and will show that you are dedicated to providing detail oriented services. Who knew that you could say so much with something as simple as a business card?

PostHeaderIcon Beauty Routine

1. I never ever ever go to bed with my makeup on, even if I have been out partying and had one too many. If you do, you will wake up the next morning, not only with a possible hangover, but with gunged, screwed up, dirty eyes that need loads of TLC. (tender loving care) So you must develop your own bedtime routine.

2. I try to get a good nights sleep as this, in my opinion, is the best beauty treatment you can have. And it’s free. As we go through life this is not always possible with all the stresses and tensions that modern day living has brought to us. But as I said, I try.

3. In the morning I have a cup of tea, if I feel particularly virtuous I’ll have a cup of green tea, ugh, and then get up to face the day.

4. Before I have a shower I tie my hair up and clean my teeth while waiting for the water to get hot.

5. After my shower I cleanse my face with one of those new style wipes and they are brilliant.

6. I spritz my face with a water spray then moisturise. I would not miss this for the world because moisturiser holds the water in your skin and helps keep your skin hydrated.

7. Next. Wow but Next. I always, without fail, use a TOTAL sunblock. My daughter says I look too pale but, if you don’t want a pale face, the answer is to use either a brown cheek shadow, blusher or an artificial sun colorant.

8. Let the cream dry thoroughly before applying your makeup. This is a pain but necessary or your skin will be too greasy.

Then I have my two minute plan.

9. Take a large soft brush, like a shaving brush, and the dust your face with mineral powder make up. This is the best make up I have ever used for a day time make up. You can add extra if you want a more made up look for evening or if you want to conceal blemishes.

10. Then with a flat eye shadow brush and using a basic beige powder shadow I brush all over my lids, fading it out the closer to the brows I get. I normally accentuate the creases of my eyelids for a slightly more dramatic look with a darker shade.

11. Then a quick lick of mascara (brown) a touch of lip gloss and I’m off. I promise you that this quick beauty routine is all you need to have a beautiful look that will keep in all day and not look overmade up or take forever to apply.

Why waste your valuable time doing all that heavy smuck?

P.S. I only ever buy moisturiser and face creams from the local supermarket, because in my opinion, unless you have a problem skin that may need specialist treatment, the designer products are over priced, often celebrity endorsed and offer little value for money.
